Today is the THIRTIETH-EIGHTH episode of The Daily Decision

It’s that time of year. You start receiving pictures of family portraits to your mail, email, Instagram, Snap, and text.

Why does everyone always look so pretty and happy?

The Cheerleader effect, also known as the group attractiveness effect, described by Walker and Vul in 2013 and van Osch in 2015 is the tendency for people to appear more attractive in a group than in isolation.

People on dating apps know this effect intuitively as they use multiple pictures of themselves … with all of their attractive friends.

This forces the potential swiper to play a game of concentration. Which person appears in each of these pictures?

Your guess is as good as mine but at least the person will be attractive because of all the cheerleaders.
