“Be positive” is always a good thing, right?
Well, yes, but …
There is such a thing as an “optimism bias” which is the tendency overestimate positive outcomes which can lead unfavorable results leading to a challenge in keeping that positive frame of mind. Oops.
The optimism bias can lead people to believe that they are unlikely to experience negative events.
Events can be seen as positive or negative. For example, if you are overly optimistic about a positive event you may believe that you are wealthier or healthier than others, which doesn’t seem so bad …
However, if you are overly optimistic about a negative event such as having a prescription medication problem, you may riskier in your choices.
It’s a good idea to be positive about yourself but do you best to temper that positivity with a dose of realism.
